If you enjoy anal sex, it’s important to choose the right condom. Some condoms just aren’t appropriate or effective for anal sex as lubrication, tightness and other factors will come into play.
Here’s what you need to know before choosing the best condoms for anal sex:
Make sure to use plenty of Lube
First, it’s critical to choose a condom that provides proper lubrication. Without proper lubrication, the condom is highly likely to come off during anal sex. It can even tear, break or dislodge during thrusting.

This is because the anal canal is typically much tighter than a vagina. In addition, the vagina usually provides its own natural lubrication, whereas the anus requires external lubrication. So, choosing a condom that includes enough lubrication is essential.
Even when using lubricated condoms, it’s still advised to use plenty of personal lubricant. A lubricant will allow much easier penetration and thrusting and won’t cause the condom to come off, tear or dislodge.
Make sure the condom protects against STIs
You also want to be sure to choose condoms that are made of the right material. Latex condoms are the standard material that condoms are made of, and the latex provides a strong barrier for sperm and for sexually transmitted diseases.
One type of condoms you want to avoid for anal sex is lambskin condoms. Lambskin is the first material used historically for pregnancy prevention.
However, ancient man did not have to worry about things like HIV. Lambskin is great if your main concern is prevention of pregnancy.
However, lambskin condoms do not provide reliable protection against sexually transmitted infections as they have pores that can allow infected bodily fluids through. Therefore, lambskin is to be avoided if you mainly engage in anal sex.
Don’t use Warming Condoms
Another type of condom you want to avoid is the type that offers warming or cooling sensations.
These condoms are quite trendy in recent years. They have a substance on the condom which provides a warming and cooling sensation to both partners.
The chemicals used to create this sensation are not a good idea to introduce into the anal cavity. The chemicals could cause unwanted sensations such as burning or itching.
More Lube
Since having proper lubrication is so important for enjoying anal sex for both partners, choosing the right lubricant is also critical, especially if you only have unlubricated condoms.
You’ll typically want to go for water or silicon based lubricants. Oil based lubricants or things like petroleum jelly can cause the condom to break down. Some good brands of lubricants to consider for anal sex are Astroglide, Pjur or Wet. See more suggestions at this page.
While the FDA has not specifically approved any condoms for anal sex, the below condoms should give you a good idea of which ones will be the most effective. (no longer the case – read more below).

Most of these are regular sized, but there are also two options for those looking for a different size. Anyone should make sure that they choose a condom that fits them well. The condom should have a snug fit, but not be too tight.
Buying singles of different brands and trying them on first is always a great idea. You’ll save money by not buying condoms that don’t fit your penis.
I understand about the lamb-skin condoms not being effective at blocking STD’s such as the AIDS virus but are
non-latex condoms safe for any type of sex?
I seem to have read that poly-pro (?) condoms had the same problem as lamb-skin and had pores that were large enough to allow transmission of STD’s ?
Have those type condoms been improved?
Even with using condoms, people should be monogamous and should get tested,
Just my thoughts
No condom manufacturer will ever guarantee condoms for anal sex. For the most part condoms were force test for vaginal sex. Also remember people can still catch disease for instance I have met men who had sex and uses condoms; but contracted 1. Herpes, genital warts, syphillis, on the scrotum at the base were the condoms does not cover; because during sex bodily fluids drip down the scrotum. Also women who have caught diseases everywhere that the condom does not cover. Remember people condoms is one line of defense the first line is that you are in a monogamous relationship and you and your one and only partner go and get tested for all Sexually transmitted diseases.
Fuck monogamy!
Needed to say this after reading the horribly judging first two comments! -.-
